Toshiba M400 with Windows Vista Beta 2 (5384) - Update - Aero Glass

It has been a few weeks since I have been using the new Vista build on my Toshiba M400.  I am happy to report that Aero Glass is now working on the integrated GMA 950(945GM Chipset)!

You will need to first activate your copy of Vista, thanks Tim for pointing that out.

Steps:

  1. Click on Start --> Control Panel
  2. Click on "Drivers and Sound"
  3. Click on "Device Manager"
  4. Drill down to "Display adapters"
  5. Find the Intel 945GM entry and Right Click and select Properties from the context menu
  6. Click on the "Drivers" tab
  7. Click on "Update Driver"
  8. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software"
  9. Click on "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
  10. Un-Check "Show compatible hardware"
  11. Select "Intel" from the Left pane
  12. Select the driver "Intel Lakeport Graphics Controller (Microsoft Corporation WDDM)
  13. Click "Next"
  14. Reboot!

I have been running 5384 on my M400 as well. I also got glass working but the problem is that there is no screen rotation when switching to the Lakeport drivers. I am at Tech Ed in Boston and ran into an issue that forced me to switch back to XP for now - at least until the conference is over. I confirmed with one of the software test engineers from MS that there is an issue with the SATA driver that is causing disk corruption. They think this is only when the unit tries to recover from hibernate or sleep modes and suggested disabling those functions until it is fixed. I had loaded a clean install of Vista Ultimate the night before I flew out. First problem I ran into was that the DVD decoder that is built in to WMP11 and is used for MCE won't play my DVD's. I have the high res screen and I was getting a DRM error. I loaded VLC and used it to play a movie on the plane. After the movie was done, I dropped the machine into hibernate mode to change batteries. On the resume attempt, I got a bluescreen. Reboots yielded the same BSOD with a code of 0x00000024 I think. I finally through my Vista DVD (always prepared :)) in and did a repair install on the plane. It seemed to recover ok and I was able to use it again for a couple of days and then I got a similar corruption error that I could not get out of. At this point, I needed a stable system with OneNote for the conference, so I restored back to my XP install. I will attempt Vista again once I get home. I could live without the hibernation support for now but I would like the glass and screen rotation both to work. One of the MS guys gave me his card so I can follow up on these issues with him. He did say that the M400 is the standard issue at MS for tablet users so they need to fix for their internal users and are working hard at it.

Alex, thanks for the hint with M400 and Aero, Do you know how to set up the bioscanner? Upek does not have an idea - they are still tracking the beta versions

Could you rotate this screen with the Lakeport drivers? I loved glass but wouldn't trade it for the ability to rotate into portrait for tablet use. Also, any luck with the mass storage or BT device drivers?
