Family Plan twice the wait

I finally spoke to an individual who knows something about what is going on.  Basically they are just swamped with activation requests.  I guess this is a good thing.

So, everything with my first IPhone is correctly setup.  The service individual assured me that I will be getting an email with the activation information.

The one thing that was mentioned was that the second port is actually holding up the activation for the first phone.  That is why I received the email that the rate plan was incompatible with my IPhone.  The activation system was only doing a check against the number of lines that are active and since the phone number port didn't complete with the second phone it will take a few more hours.  Lets see what happens after 4:51am when it is supposed to all come together...

Good night...

BTW, it seems that the IPhone is beginning to sell out...So far one place in NJ, Atlantic City...

IPhone Paper Weight times 2

Underneath all the expert design and engineering is just another phone company.  So far I have two IPhones waiting for number porting.  I spoke to 5 customer service individuals trying to explain that I can't use the IPhone but no one seems to care.  The typical run around is that you should wait for the mystic email message with the news that the phone is active.

Oh by the way, I stopped by an Apple retail store and talked to someone who basically looked at me if I was crazy.

Well I am tired.  I will give it until the morning...before....Wait this is awesome here is the Mystic email, I am ready to throw everything out the window...

Your current AT&T rate plan is not compatible with the iPhone.

What is the deal.

One the phone with customer service person 6 and 7 and....

How to avoid IPhone Activation Frustration

As many of you know, Apple has decided to forego the in store activation model to allow individuals to just pickup the phone and activate at their leisure.  Leisure is right not on the buyer but AT&T.

From what I can gather this is what you can expect the experience depending on what you want done.

  1. Activate IPhone with a new number < 10 minutes
  2. Activate IPhone with transfer of AT&T number ~ 24 hours but you can still use the IPhone
  3. Activate IPhone with transfer of non-AT&T number ~24 hours and your IPhone will be a paper weight until it is activated.

Now what happens when you want to do two?  Double the fun!

If you are going to select the Family plan and also port your existing number, you will need to wait a few hours and then add the second IPhone.   I found about 4 hours is about when your old phone number is in the system, allowing you to add the second IPhone.

So in a nutshell, if you are not married to your phone number, don't port it.

IPhone Activation problems galore

With Apples seemingly impenetrable armor, there is an Achilles heal, AT&T.  It seems that I am not the only one suffering to use the IPhone after requesting a number port.

A Day of Disney/Pixar and Apple

Well yesterday I attended two of Steve Jobs' product launches.  Ratatouille and the IPhone.  What can I say but well done.

The movie was very entertaining and the IPhone is a work of art.  You don't understand the beauty of the product engineering until you get it in your hand or take it apart as some people have already done.

As far as the IPhone, I didn't wait outside in the elements for four days like some people did, I went to the Mall about two hours beforehand.  As far a product launches go, a big Kudos goes to Apple, the experience went smoothly.  The Apple employees were well organized and everyone was civil, imagine that!

On another note, let's hand it to Apple as they kept everyone in the dark as to the actually quantities of product.  Sorry to everyone looking to sell yours on EBay.  It seems that after all the waiting, every store still has plenty to spare.  Anyway, it is just another two hours of my life standing on a line.

So how is the phone you ask, you mean the IPhone?  I can't tell you yet.  Since Apple has no control of those other mobile phone operators, it is going to take up to 24 hours for me to activate the IPhone (Due to a number port request), the IPhone is useless until it is activated.  And on top of it I will probably need to wait another 24 hours after that since I am trying to sign two phones up for the Family Plan.  The plans are pretty good, for about $130 I get two phones, 1400 minutes, unlimited internet, and about 200 SMS messages.

My only gripe is that the IPhone should be available for some sort of use while the Phone Activation is completed.
