Just a thought...

iPhone impressions

It is an amazing device!

Apple has really done it right.  Of course the device does have many short comings but overall I think that Apple has made the right design compromises and delivered a great product.  Apple has definitely created a great mobile platform.  Since the OS is OSX we should continue to see Apple build upon the platform and deliver new applications.  Lets hope that they open the platform for development.

The experience using the device has been nothing but smooth.  I am impressed with how responsive the UI is, especially when multi-tasking, e.g. listening to music, browsing etc...(As compared to Palm and Windows Mobile)  I did noticed some issues with coverflow where the album art is not synced with the right album.

One thing that I like is the simplicity of applications.  Yes we all like features, but if you take the main features of an app and make it easy to use then it is much better than jamming in a bunch of things that we will never use on a mobile device.  I see the iPhone being a mobile based dashboard, eventually hooking into all the sources of information that I am interested in.

There is one thing to point out, If you are running Vista x64 or Windows XP x64 you will NOT be able to sync the iPhone on those OSes.  It also seems that iTunes has some issues using multiple phones on the same computer, with or without user account switching.  Sometimes one or the other iPhone would not be detected.  Also on my Toshiba M400 and Vista, the iTunes and the iPhone causes a Blue Screen of Death, a reinstall of the OS didn't do anything to rectify the situation.

What do I like

  • Awesome UI - Simple, Responsive and good to look at.
  • Great email client - HTML email support
  • Great web browser - Real rendering of Web Pages
  • Good phone features and visual voicemail
  • Great battery life

Is it a phone for everyone?

  • Not if you don't have AT&T coverage.
  • Not if you want to use as a dial-up wireless modem with your laptop
  • Not if you have some custom apps like eWallet that you need to run
  • No build-in GPS
  • No HSDPA

What are some things that I would like to see improved?

  • Copy and Paste <-- My number one pet peeve
  • Hardware button accessible quick dial menu
  • Hardware button phone answer
  • Bluetooth headphone support
  • Replaceable battery
