Nespresso Lattissima - Simplicity for the coffee addict
Well with the new addition to the family, my ritual routine on the weekend was to impersonate a Coffee Barista and try and make Espresso and Lattes was cut short due to time.  I've been hooked on good coffee ever since Financier opened up near my office.  Between the Lattes and the French Pastries Financier and my old friend Starbucks have really put a dent in my wallet. One day I walked into a Williams Sonoma and they had a Nespresso representative there.  At the time they were trying to sell me a Nespresso D290C , a great machine that makes great espresso fast.  I was very surprised by the taste and quality of the espresso that came from such a small capsule.  I currently own a Beville 800XL which I use with Illy Pods, which is starting to exhibit some pump problems.  I believe they replaced my model with one that has a double boiler with19bars pressure.  In any case I decided it was time to make a break from the manual espresso thing to something...

Verizon USB727 EDVO rev A Wireless Modem
As I mentioned in a previous post today, I have decided to ditch my Cingular Option 3.6Mbps PC-Card in favor for the Verizon USB727 USB Wireless Modem.  I also had the Sprint 595 AirCard which I also decided to get rid of due to coverage in my house. The main reason that the Option card was not working for me is that it could not maintain a reasonable connection during my train ride home (NJ Transit NE Corridor). So far on a moving train I get anywhere between 300Kbps to almost 1Mbps...which is awesome on a moving vehicle.  Stationary performance is awesome...1Mbps to 1.3Mbps sometimes peaking at 3Mbps... Second, the connection speed is quick and since the USB modem is rather small I can mount it with velcro on the top my laptop screen, enhancing the performance. So far the only big negative is that Verizon apparently disables the built in GPS or doesn't implement it.  At lease Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007/2008 doesn't recognize it as a valid device. (Notice in...

Paperless billing Snafu
First we had AT&T with their 10lbs paper bills now everyone is trying to promote the paperless bill.  I recently ran into an interesting bug with one of those paperless systems. So In June I switched my phone service from Verizon to AT&T to enjoy the iPhone.  So as usual I paid my bill online before the switch.  Lately I have been rather disappointed with the AT&T Options 3G PC-Card, so I decided to go back to Verizon to satisfy my wireless broadband addiction.  I placed the order for USB727 USB rev A card and I was sent a notice that I had an outstanding balance and my order was put on hold.  I scratched my head and wondered how I could owe money...I didn't receive any emails...nor did I receive any paper mails.  So I called Verizon and then discovered I did indeed have a balance.  But due to a bug or possibly a feature of the paperless billing system, the moment my account was deactivated, so was the notifications of billing.  Well...
How to use your iPhone for offline Document Storage
The iPhone is a pretty good device when it comes to reading web pages and such. One of the missing features with the web paradigm is that you need to be always connected to get content or access those web based application that is being developed with the iPhone UI. I have found myself surfing the net in more situations where I would have not before, for example I might be checking the news during breakfast where as before I would read the newspaper. Since the device is less intrusive than bringing a laptop to the table it makes it so more convenient. So on to the good stuff. Lets say you have a PDF or document that you would like to have off-line. Since the iPhone doesn't let you sync files to the flash and access them via some file browser you have to cheat. Basically all you have to do is email the document to yourself . Now the trick. You will need to synchronize the email with your iPhone (I am using IMAP and Exchange). Since the iPhone by default only syncs the first 50 emails...

iPhone as a Phone thoughts
Today I finally used the iPhone to participate on a conference call. I typically have a 10 minute walk from the train to the office in NYC. The result was nothing but amazing. The audio quality was excellent, I could hear everything going on using the headphones. Additionally the included mic on the phone seems decent, it does pickup a lot of the background noise. but the mute on the phone really mutes the handset. (You don't hear buzzing on the conf call) So for the whole walk the call was steady and no drops. Unfortunately I dropped the conf call when pressing the button on the mic. I think it was due to the fact I already had music playing before I placed the call. I think if I started w/o music playing, the mic switch would of worked (muted instead of restarting music) as expected. On another note, entering data in the phone book is very easy. Apple keeps the interface free of unused fields (As opposed to Windows Mobile). I was able to quickly add/update quite a few contacts during...

Exchange 2007, IMAP4 and iPhone
I finally have my iPhone syncing successfully with my Exchange 2007 server. You need to do the following Enable IMAP4 port (993) in firewall Enable SMTP port (25) in firewall Enable IMAP service in Exchange 2007 Enable IMAP for the user accounts ( Set-CASMailbox -Identity mailboxname -IMAPEnabled $true ) -The interesting thing is I didn't see IMAP listed in the dialog in the article, but in PowerShell you can see it enabled for the user. Enable SSL for IMAP service. (Much easier if you have IIS SSL Cert Installed Allow "ms-Exch-SMTP-Accept-Any-Recipient" right to the SMTP connector. - In my configuration I have a service that sends anonymous email to my Exchange server. I moved the anonymous concector to port 26 and kept it internal. The external facing connector doesn't allow anonymous access. On the iPhone You need to configure the email address to be and email address of your Exchange domain, otherwise the SMTP connector will reject the emails. Use "Password" authentication and not NTLM...
