The iPhone is a pretty good device when it comes to reading web pages and such. One of the missing features with the web paradigm is that you need to be always connected to get content or access those web based application that is being developed with the iPhone UI. I have found myself surfing the net in more situations where I would have not before, for example I might be checking the news during breakfast where as before I would read the newspaper. Since the device is less intrusive than bringing a laptop to the table it makes it so more convenient. So on to the good stuff. Lets say you have a PDF or document that you would like to have off-line. Since the iPhone doesn't let you sync files to the flash and access them via some file browser you have to cheat. Basically all you have to do is email the document to yourself . Now the trick. You will need to synchronize the email with your iPhone (I am using IMAP and Exchange). Since the iPhone by default only syncs the first 50 emails...
I will definitely be doing this this weekend... DIY iPhone earbud replacement
It looks like 1/3 of the people who took this poll have permanently returned the phone...
Here is one of the most indepth reviews of the iPhone. It reveals many of the missing features with the applications and integration with POP servers.
Today I finally used the iPhone to participate on a conference call. I typically have a 10 minute walk from the train to the office in NYC. The result was nothing but amazing. The audio quality was excellent, I could hear everything going on using the headphones. Additionally the included mic on the phone seems decent, it does pickup a lot of the background noise. but the mute on the phone really mutes the handset. (You don't hear buzzing on the conf call) So for the whole walk the call was steady and no drops. Unfortunately I dropped the conf call when pressing the button on the mic. I think it was due to the fact I already had music playing before I placed the call. I think if I started w/o music playing, the mic switch would of worked (muted instead of restarting music) as expected. On another note, entering data in the phone book is very easy. Apple keeps the interface free of unused fields (As opposed to Windows Mobile). I was able to quickly add/update quite a few contacts during...
I finally have my iPhone syncing successfully with my Exchange 2007 server. You need to do the following Enable IMAP4 port (993) in firewall Enable SMTP port (25) in firewall Enable IMAP service in Exchange 2007 Enable IMAP for the user accounts ( Set-CASMailbox -Identity mailboxname -IMAPEnabled $true ) -The interesting thing is I didn't see IMAP listed in the dialog in the article, but in PowerShell you can see it enabled for the user. Enable SSL for IMAP service. (Much easier if you have IIS SSL Cert Installed Allow "ms-Exch-SMTP-Accept-Any-Recipient" right to the SMTP connector. - In my configuration I have a service that sends anonymous email to my Exchange server. I moved the anonymous concector to port 26 and kept it internal. The external facing connector doesn't allow anonymous access. On the iPhone You need to configure the email address to be and email address of your Exchange domain, otherwise the SMTP connector will reject the emails. Use "Password" authentication and not NTLM...
Here are the advantages with using Glass instead of plasic for the screen, PCWorld Review .
It is an amazing device! Apple has really done it right. Of course the device does have many short comings but overall I think that Apple has made the right design compromises and delivered a great product. Apple has definitely created a great mobile platform. Since the OS is OSX we should continue to see Apple build upon the platform and deliver new applications. Lets hope that they open the platform for development. The experience using the device has been nothing but smooth. I am impressed with how responsive the UI is, especially when multi-tasking, e.g. listening to music, browsing etc...(As compared to Palm and Windows Mobile) I did noticed some issues with coverflow where the album art is not synced with the right album. One thing that I like is the simplicity of applications. Yes we all like features, but if you take the main features of an app and make it easy to use then it is much better than jamming in a bunch of things that we will never use on a mobile device. I see the iPhone...
Well so much for sleep, just as I was about to call it a day when I received this email... We're sorry. AT&T has identified a problem with the information you provided. So I spent another hour on the phone with AT&T. It seems that some information that should have been placed in my account from the ITunes activation was missing. So just as the agent was just about to update the system with the correct info, I was informed that I should call back because the "CARE" system was receiving a system update. I have no more words to describe the frustration. ***Update It is now 7am and I am on the phone again and it seems that the "CARE" system is back up. The agent has me on hold, no breath holding here... To be continued...
I finally spoke to an individual who knows something about what is going on. Basically they are just swamped with activation requests. I guess this is a good thing. So, everything with my first IPhone is correctly setup. The service individual assured me that I will be getting an email with the activation information. The one thing that was mentioned was that the second port is actually holding up the activation for the first phone. That is why I received the email that the rate plan was incompatible with my IPhone. The activation system was only doing a check against the number of lines that are active and since the phone number port didn't complete with the second phone it will take a few more hours. Lets see what happens after 4:51am when it is supposed to all come together... Good night... BTW, it seems that the IPhone is beginning to sell out...So far one place in NJ, Atlantic City... To be continued...
