Dell DJ vs. iPOD: Comparing the 3G iPod, iPod Mini, and Dell Pocket DJ

Please note: this post was originally published on 7/8/2004. I've since updated it to include the Dell Pocket DJ and iPod mini. This does not cover the 4G iPod, 2G iPod Mini or the Video iPod.

Dell has since discontinued the hard drive-based Digital Jukebox line, including the Pocket DJ reviewed here.

Chris compares the Dell DJ to the iPOD. On paper, Chris says there are some advantages the Dell unit has over Apple's iPod.

Size Does Matter

Of course, there's a glaring omission in this comparison - physical size. With the Dell, what you gain in technical features you also gain in size. The image below shows the size difference between the original Dell DJ and the 3G iPod. The 4G iPod is of course a bit smaller (the 40GB model is about the size of the 20GB model there).

As you can see, it's a bit wider and thicker. It may not seem like much, but that bulk definitely makes a difference when you put it in your pocket.

The Pocket DJ, on the other hand, is quite small. Here's a picture of the Dell Pocket DJ, the iPod Mini, and a 3G iPod side-by-side:

I'll try to get a few other pictures up here, with other players as well. As I mentioned, the 4G iPods are a bit smaller than the 3G models.

Charging...

The 3G iPod will charge when connected to a powered FireWire Card. (If you own a PC, note that many PCMCIA FireWire cards are not powered). The 3G version does not charge with USB 2.0, but subsequent models (the 4G and mini) both do.

The Dell Pocket DJ does not charge over USB. Actually, that's not entirely true. If you turn off the unit and disable any sync software, it will charge over USB, but it won't charge as long as it is "Docked". In other words, it won't charge while you're transferring music.

The interface

Of course, the iPod sets the standard with its simplicity. The UI is extremely intuitive and very easy to use. One of my biggest complaints has always been the ability to create custom playlists on the go. This is fixed in the latest version of the firmware, although you still can't give them a friendly name.

The Dell interface is very similar. Definitely not as polished, but it adds a few nice touches.

First off, you can create multiple playlists on the go. Actualy, I prefer their system for playing music. You can browse in the same ways as you can with the iPod - by artist, album, genre, etc. However, instead of just playing, you can "select" music into the Now Playing list. Basically, when playing music, it acts like the On-The-Go playlist on the iPod. The big difference is that you can actually save the current selection to a true playlist. You can also remove individual tracks from the list, instead of only being able to clear the playlist and start from scratch.

The Dell also has a hard button to return to the home screen, something the iPod sorely needs. On the other hand, the Dell uses hard buttons for adjusting volume... the iPod's scroll wheel is definitely better suited for this.

The iPod turns on and off instantly (or, rather, it 'sleeps'). By comparison, the Dell (at times) takes almost a half a second to start up and nearly two full seconds to shut off.

The Dell also lacks the ability to browse by Artist/Album when you initially select the Genre - the only option is to view all tracks. This works fine when you go to Artist - you can then browse to their individual albums, but sadly not with Genre, which is how I use this most often. Oversight?

Construction quality

Apple definitely puts out a well-made product. The iPod mini in particular is extremely sturdy. The Dell is sturdy, but aspects of it feel cheap by comparison, particularly the plastic scroll wheel.

Sound quality

The iPod sounds a bit richer than the Dell, but it's not a big difference... barely noticeable on my Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia Headphones. It's a bit more noticeable with my Ultimate Ears. The difference was a bit more apparent when hooked up through my receiver, but again, nothing major.

You can charge an iPod on a PC, but only if you have the large Firewire port. Most PC laptops do not come with that port. I don't know about whether many PC desktops do or not.

But because of the iPods short battery life, if you do not have the large Firewire port that charges the iPod as you load songs on it the iPod cannot sustain its charge long enough to actually load it full of songs, in my experience. That can be very annoying - charge the iPod and load some music on it, charge it again and load on somemore, charge it again and then finish loading. It can take awhile.

As for size, an extra 2 onces and a millimeter don't seem very substantial overall.

Also, the iPod is not "arguably" more expensive than the Dell DJ. It is over $100 more for a model with the same amount of memory, that's a fact.

My apologies - the last was a typo. I originally wrote arguably overpriced. When I changed that to more expensive, I missed the arguably.

And even a seemingly insignificant difference in size can make a world of difference when it's in your pocket...

People have to realize something, the ipod has many extras that are useless and take more space away for more songs. The Dell DJ is much better that the ipod. 12 more hours of battery than ipod, and i think it looks a lot better than the ipod. Also, who cares if its a little heavier, it's roughly $200 less than the ipod for a better mp3 player. Its a no brainer.

The whole point of this post is that it's *NOT* a no-brainer. Sometimes the physical attributes outweigh purely technical specifications.

They certainly do for me. I get more utility out of this than I did my Archos, because I have it in more places. It's still a bit big for my liking - I really want a 10GB in the mini form factor.

But my point is, when this stuff is in your pocket, SIZE DOES MATTER>

How big was the iPod? Where they the same songs? Same bitrate?

Obviously, they hold the same space - you're not going to get that much more in the Dell unless there's something different. If you resample them all to 128, say, you're going to fit significantly more in.

Go with the Dell DJ if you enjoy hard drive failures and random crashes that cause the device to lock up. Why else would they install a reset button on the unit? I guess Creative Labs feels hardware reset buttons are a feature now. That's right, Creative designed and builds these wonderful DAP's.

Keep that paper clip handy while your on the phone with Tech support in India.

Wow, you people are dumb.
It's an MP3 player, who cares if it has 9000 songs or whatever.
When I go out I'm not going to listen to more than 2000 songs, I have around 1850 songs on my winamp playlist, I barely ever have the time to listen to them all.
The iPod is much more comfortable, I can take it out when I jog, or work out.. Or when I'm taking the bus to work.
Right now I'm using my sisters, I'm planning to buy another one for myself for xmas.
I hear that this "Dell pocket DJ" crashes alot, one of my close friends said she already bought 3 pocket dj's and each of them broke.

Like I said in the past, the point I was trying to make is that this is not a no brainer. Each device has its pros and cons.

I love the form factor of the iPod mini - the brushed steel feels particularly sturdy. But some of these other devices have caught my eye - the new iRiver mini player and the Zen Touch Micro. Both are comparable on size AND have additional features.

To me, size is critical. Again, the bigger it is, the less I will use it, regardless of how many features it has. If size becomes a non-issue, however, that's when I can look at the other aspects of it - does it have an FM radio? Does it feel sturdy and well-made? Is the interface particularly easy or hard to use?

I don't get all this FM bull on these players. It is an mp3 player that holds 5000-10000 songs. FM Capabilities? No thanks. Like anyone uses FM with 5000 mp3's in their pocket.

The user interface of the iPod is absolutely increadible. I have always purchased Dell laptops because they are so price competitive in relation to teh quality, but for me the iPod wins only marginally when everything is taken into account. Ipod is great too but you get the same amount of space on the dell fer $50 cheaper. Also why do you need games and a calander on your mp3 when youre buying it for music? I think thats stupid. Plus you cant even put memos in the calander. Sorry i think the Dell Dj will satisfy anyone, as it did for me.

i think that the dell dj is the way to go. you get long battery life you get 20 gigs of songs and it holds data files like a jump drive. i believe the dell dj looks cooler (especially with the blue lighting in the background) and i know it is a little bigger and heavier but when i had my ipod it didnt feel any different in my pocket (that is just for me) and i would go with the dj. I know i know that you get games on your ipods but the dj is 50 bucks cheaper and like someone said this is an mp3 player it is made to hold songs. and by the way the games and all that stuff take up more room. some of you say o i dont need 20 gigs well i do. i have used about 15 of them and i use the rest for data. and my dj hasnt frozen on me yet. for me i also dont like how the ipod is setup that wheel thingy drives me crazy.

the dj looks cooler and it isnt that much bigger so the dj should satisfy you well.

I want to know whether the DJ can shuffle songs as well...

I am trying to decide between a Dell DJ (or the Dell Pocket DJ) and the iPod and the mini iPod.

I like the look of the iPod but I am not exactly a money tree...I have a lot of stuff I need as well. And also, when you get the $300 iPod, how much does the total have to be when you additionally buy a battery and a case? I heard you really should use a case because they get scratched easily. And how much are the batteries? They are rechargeable, does it come with a recharger? Sorry, I know I sound stupid but I really don't know these things. And about the mini...I like the cuteness factor and the $50 cheaper, but they only hold what, 1,000 songs? That sounds like a lot but who knows if I will want more?

My brother has a Pocket DJ and he said it's good...how easy is it to download songs to? And where do you do it from? He hasn't tried to download any songs yet. Is it as unreliable as everyone says? How reliable is the iPod?

i think that the ipod is better simply because apple has had the experience with making mp3 players. ok some people feel that playing games on the ipod is whack, understandable. Did u kno that you could load word documents onto the ipod for example like notes from school, the answers to a test, etc. i think that playing games on the ipod is a good thing because yea u may just want it for music but what if u wanna play a game to entertain your self while waiting for the bus or something, and besides teh ipod looks better anyway cuz a nice silver and white color, also u can print ipod tattoos and stick to your pod to change the designs on the outside. also no one mentioned the ipod photo, which is even better, its got a color screen it has 60GB and you can even store videos on it. I just feel that apple knows what they're are doing so they should just keep it up.

Also their is not very many accesories available for the DJ. Its stange that all of u people seem to love WMA...why? they take up less room yes, but the whole idea here is to get gr8 sound quality. so wat if the dell gives you 2x as many songs?(apparently - dont know how tho...) quality is much more important than quantity when it comes to enjoying music. yes ipod is expensive, but that is the only con ive been able to come up with. My ipod has NEVER crashed, there IS a reset combination, and the clck wheel is so far the most innovative, quick and easy to use navigation method i hav yetto see.

ya well i just got the dell bigger than the dj. it holds 10,000 songs and has a 12 hour battery life. it holds other files, just like the ipod. and for 5,000 more songs and 75 cheaper (dell225$-300$ipod) the dell holds more songs and is less! WHATS THE PROBLEM?the size? ya it weighs 6.8 ounces i dont think youll be crying about the weight and it isnt exactly huge either!

I think dell dj's are more appealing to the eye! I think it is shiny and cool! The i-pod is more expensive and it is less appealing to the eye! Shineyness is the most important ingreadiant when comparing 2 thing. And obviously the dell dj is much more shinier! And now to the technical area. People say that i-pods are the coolest and that they are way better than the dj.......but i don't really think there is much of a difference. To be honest, all the people have other stuff from dell way more thani see people with Apple computers or anything else. I think dell is a much more trustable company. I am for the dj.

Well, the iPod minis now have 18 hours of battery life and are now 200 for 4 gigs and 6 gigers are 250. Now, the iPod Photo that is now 30 gigs cost 350 and, I belive, 450 for a 60 gigers. I have an iPod and really like it, I have not used the Dell Dj, so I can't really voice my opinion on it, being as I haven't used it. My ipod is really nice, and the earbuds are great, too. Navigation is a blast and the "hold" button just makes it better.
Oh and for those who need a way to convert WAV and all that to mp3, you might want to look at this free software http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm You can also get more plugins to it.

I have an ipod mini. There really is no point to getting a Dell DJ... no offense. I mean, I use iTunes, therefor it seems logical to use and ipod/mini. If you don't use iTunes, get the Dell, but if you do, get the ipod/ipod mini.
Either is good.

Well, I think that the dell is smaller, holdsd more songs (2500) than the i-pod mini (1000) and it costs the same amount. Also, the dells are compadable with pc's, which is always good. And to bagel boy, I LOVE SHINY TOO! The dj is definately shinyer. I just got my dj yesterday and I already have like 700 songs on it, it is so easy to use.

For all of those who like SHINY, the new minis are a little shinier than the 1G models, as the colors are a little more "saturated". It also bears mentioning that the iPod minis are, obviously, available in various colors, while the Dell is only available in the shiny silver shown above.

Also - the new minis offer 6GB, while the Dell Pocket DJ is currently only at 5GB.

Danielle - the Dell Pocket DJ, which is roughly the same physical size as the mini, definitely does NOT hold 2.5x the number of songs. The full-sized Dell DJ would (at 20GB), but obviously that's significantly larger and should be compared to the full iPod, not the mini.
