  • The Case for Freeing the WSJ Online

An interesting article in Business Week about opening up the Wall Street Journal Online in the wake of the sale to Murdoch. For The Wall Street Journal Online, going free will come at a high cost. The daily financial newspaper is one of the few major publications to successfully charge for access to...

  • I Don't Get Twitter

I am really struggling to find value in Twitter, and I'm certainly not the only one staying out of the Twitter lovefest. It is mildly interesting from a technical perspective but doesn't really add much to what I can do today. (Not to mention it's been down and/or slow under the load lately...

  • Google bought the brand, not the technology

Scoble says Google bought YouTube because it "realized it couldn’t make its own video service look as cool as YouTube." As I said before, Google was buying YouTube's audience and/or employees, not the technology . After listening to the Google-YouTube conference call, it definitely sounds like Chad and...

  • PodShow gets funding... but forgets to renew DNS?

Maybe that really was the last Gillmor Gang . My downloads of the latest show kept failing, and now I know why - PodShow.com expired on Oct 4th and is now parked. Ooops! I don't know what's more ironic - their domain expires and they forget to renew just after they get funding, or that GoDaddy sponsors...

  • The problem with regulating what you don't understand

This interview would be funnier if Senator Stevens wasn't involved in crafting Internet regulation. Stevens does an amazing job (jaw-dropping, really) of explaining how the Internet works and why network neutrality is a bad thing. Choice quotes: But this service isn't going to go through the interent...

  • PayPerPost.com pays bloggers for their posts... and credibility?

When I first saw PayPerPost.com mentioned on TechCrunch , I thought it was a joke. It had to be. The more I think about it, though, this could be a great service if done right. The key, as Marshall alluded to, is that the bloggers are being paid to evaluate the product with no requirement for positive...

  • The Web 2.0 Trademark Debacle

There has been a bit of controversy over O'Reilly's "Web 2.0" service mark cease-and-desist letter and their subsequent "we had to" response . I'd say Mike Arrington correctly predicted the lynching , though some are defending O'Reilly . ( Scoble is just upset he's no longer the King of Evil ). Fortunately...

  • Blogging from Office 2007 (Beta 2)

Well, I finally got Office Beta 2 downloaded and all of my machines upgraded from Beta 1 Technical Refresh. So far, so good. Performance is still not ideal, but it's much improved from previous builds (especially in Outlook). I was going to write this in Word, but I can't seem to get it working. When...

  • Blog for the readers, not the traffic

I recently celebrated my third year writing this blog , which I thought was a pretty big milestone. One thing I didn't really address in that post is why I have continued to write here. I couldn't agree more with Scoble's comment about weblog traffic . I’ve been getting asked “how do you get traffic...

  • Using Exchange and FolderShare for ubiquitous access to your information

I've mentioned in the past that I have an effective way to consume information , and also alluded to my use of FolderShare , but I never really discussed the system in its entirety. The problem I want to keep my desktop and tablet synchronized, including e-mail, contacts, documents, etc. I want it done...
