  • What exactly is an iPhone application?

Scoble mentions 3 new iPhone apps today from Newsgator, Bloglines, and Google. It's interesting that companies keep saying they are doing "iPhone development", when really these are nothing more than sites skinned to look more natural on the iPhone. The iPhone is the only mobile phone that...

  • I Don't Get Twitter

I am really struggling to find value in Twitter, and I'm certainly not the only one staying out of the Twitter lovefest. It is mildly interesting from a technical perspective but doesn't really add much to what I can do today. (Not to mention it's been down and/or slow under the load lately...

  • The tradeoffs of the Energy Policy Act of 2005

As part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 that Congress passed last year, Daylight Savings Time will be extended by four weeks. One of the rationales behind DST is that we leverage the longer daylight hours in the summer months to minimize the need for artificial light. This operates off the assumption...

  • PodShow gets funding... but forgets to renew DNS?

Maybe that really was the last Gillmor Gang . My downloads of the latest show kept failing, and now I know why - PodShow.com expired on Oct 4th and is now parked. Ooops! I don't know what's more ironic - their domain expires and they forget to renew just after they get funding, or that GoDaddy sponsors...

  • Gartner sends a cease and desist to remove a link

Scoble passes along that James Governor, an analyst for RedMonk, received a C&D from Gartner for a link . Wow. I obviously haven't seen the letter, but I'm trying to imagine what possible legal recourse they have to linking to a publicly visible URL. Obviously there's no copyright infringement and...

  • The Lost Mac Ads

Perhaps in light of the Apple ads that don't make sense , Best Week Ever unveiled the Lost Mac ads this week featuring Christian Finnegan and Nick Kroll. PC: "Right, but a podcast about your favorite hoodies and independent films won't help you pay for that vacation." Mac: "No, that's what my trust fund...

  • This Apple advertisement doesn't make any sense. Touche!

I love the new Get A Mac campaign . Very clever, and great casting. I'm willing to overlook some of the factual inaccuracies because, hey, this is advertising, right? One of the most recent ads ( mov ) doesn't make a lot of sense to me though. The ad in question is touting Boot Camp, OS X's ability to...

  • No worries, I programmed the memory card to self destruct!

I just watched this week's episode of 24 on DVR. I'm usually willing to suspend disbelief, but this was too much. Jack just said, "I programmed the memory card to self-destruct". Are... you... kidding.. me? Where do I get one of these? It would probably work well with my exploding Xbox . Or better yet...

  • Did you hear the one about the lawyer and the software engineer?

phosita points to a post claiming that software engineers are stupid - at least when compared to lawyers. The author's underlying premise is that the legal profession has a high barrier to entry that, in turn, guarantees high salaries. Each step is a filter. For example, only 66% of students finish high...
